This summer, 9 Duke students have travelled to Belfast, Northern Ireland as part of DukeEngage. We hail from different parts of the United States and involve ourselves in a variety of different aspects of campus life. However, over the next few weeks we will be working with different organizations that deal with the aftermath of the conflict in and around Northern Ireland, which many people refer to as the ‘Troubles’. We have been placed with different host organizations who provide a variety of professional services to different communities across Northern Ireland. This type of work ranges from caring for and assisting victims all the way to advocating for the Belfast LGBT community. Every week, a different Duke student, or students, will be remarking on the previous week of work and what professional duties they have taken on, but also what they are learning in a more holistic sense. Since our group is also traveling to cities outside Belfast, hearing from speakers, and simply exploring a foreign city, we have a multitude of new and interesting experiences to document. We arrived on May 20th and we leave about 8 weeks later on July 14th! As they say on this side of the pond, Cheers!
